Doing Business and Doing Good

Many community organizations do good work, as do many businesses. When the two team up, the resulting partnership can accomplish great things.  

And that is exactly what has happened since 2000, when four of north Jersey’s largest corporations began to partner with the Volunteer Center of Bergen County and Bergen County’s United Way to form the Northern New Jersey Business Volunteer Council (BVC), whose mission is to provide leadership in meeting community needs by mobilizing employee volunteers.  

Today, the BVC counts 32 member companies which represent every sector of the economy and range in size from small, local businesses to major international companies.  Despite their differences, members agree that being a good neighbor and good corporate citizen impacts the community – and the bottom line.

The BVC mobilizes more than 30,000 employee volunteers every year, with a specific focus on impacting the lives of low-income children and families.

BVC activity revolves around four annual strategic initiatives designed to address literacy, emotional well-being, hunger and education.  Through these initiatives, the BVC has raised over $1 million in ten years.

The BVC enjoys strong attendance at its monthly meetings, which serve not only as a way to coordinate activities, but as a networking opportunity, a forum for discussion of current trends and national initiatives and objectives, and training on issues related to corporate volunteerism and philanthropy.

Mission

To significantly impact the lives of children and families - specifically in the areas of hunger, health, and education - by connecting area businesses with non-profit organizations to direct resources to those in need.
